The national Park

Abisko National Park was established in 1909 and is one of the first 8 national parks in Europe to be established in the same year. Since Abisko comes first in alphabetical order, it is usually called the first official national park. The purpose was to protect an area of high Nordic mountain nature and as a memorial ground for scientific research. STF Abisko Turiststation and Abisko Visitor Center, Naturum, Is located in the national park and the north start of The King’s Trail begins there.

Ábeskovvu

The name Abisko comes from the North Sami name Ábeskovvu which translated into Swedish means roughly ‘the forest by the big water’. The big water then refers to Torneträsk which is Sweden’s sixth largest and second deepest lake.
However, Torneträsk is considered Sweden’s largest mountain lake. In the winter, when it’s frozen, you can walk out on the ice to search for the northern lights or just enjoy the surounding mountains.

The mountains

Tjuonavaggi or Lapporten is one of Sweden’s most characteristic mountain formations. It is a U-shaped valley formed by the ice sheet and lies between Tjuonacohkka in the east and Nissoncorru in the west. Tjuonavaggi means goose valley in Sami and the mountain peaks mean goose peak and women’s peak. The valley to the west is called Nissonvaggi and means women’s valley. In the past, only women were allowed to pass through and men were allowed to walk through Lapporten so as not to bring misfortune with them, according to legend.

In the National park you can take the chair lift up on Nuolja to look at the night sky during winter evenings, ski some offpist during winter days or hike to the top during the day or night and see the nidnight sun when it never sets in the summer.

See you in the mountains!

Ice Climbing in Abisko

Ice climbing is one of the most popular activities to do in Abisko because it is one of Sweden’s best places to go  ice climbing. In and around Abisko there are a lot of different icefalls for beginners as well as experienced ice climbers. The many icefalls and the beautiful surroundings with the Abisko Mountains and the veiw  over lake Torneträsk is some of the reasons why ice climbing in Abisko is so spectacular.

What is Ice Climbing?

Ice climbing is a thrilling winter sport that captivates the hearts of many. It’s a unique blend of physical challenge, mental focus, and a deep connection with nature. Ice climbing is an adventurous winter sport where individuals ascend ice formations. These formations include frozen waterfalls, icefalls, and ice-covered rock faces.

The Evolution of Ice Climbing

Ice climbing has transformed dramatically over the years. Originally, it was a vital skill for mountaineers conquering icy summits. It has since blossomed into an independent sport enjoyed worldwide. In the 19th century, early climbers used rudimentary gear, adapting tools from various trades. It wasn’t until the 1970s that ice climbing began to gain recognition as a unique activity. Developments in gear during this period made climbs safer and more accessible, sparking greater interest in the sport.
Technological advancements have continued to shape the sport. Modern equipment, designed for efficiency and safety, has opened new possibilities for climbers. Lighter, more durable materials have enabled climbers to tackle previously unattainable ice formations.

Ice Climbing Equipment

Ice climbing demands specialized gear that is both reliable and efficient. This equipment allows climbers to safely navigate icy terrains and conquer challenging routes. Each piece plays a vital role, ensuring that climbers can proceed with confidence and security.

First on the list are ice axes. These tools are indispensable for stability and control. Ice axes allow climbers to anchor themselves, providing security on precarious surfaces. Another critical piece of gear is crampons. These are spiked devices attached to boots, giving climbers traction on ice. They transform slippery surfaces into climbable paths.
Beyond traction, climbers also rely heavily on harnesses and helmets. Harnesses secure climbers to ropes, while helmets protect against falling debris. Safety in ice climbing cannot be overstated.
Furthermore, ropes and belaying devices are fundamental to any climb. They provide the necessary connection between climber and anchor, facilitating controlled ascents and descents.

Balance, Movement and Footwork

Mastering ice climbing techniques is essential for safety and success on icy surfaces. The sport demands a specific skill set for effective movement. Understanding these techniques and good tool placement increases efficiency and speed, and reduces fatigue during climbs. When you join our ice climbing tour, the guide will help you master some basic techniques and give you advice about how th use the equipment before you start move up the icefall.

A main key to success is to focus on your body positioning. Maintain balance and use your legs to support most of your weight. This approach conserves energy and improves stability on ice.
Basic movement and footwork are foundational to ice climbing. Efficient footwork enables climbers to ascend with reduced effort. Most beginners start by mastering the “French technique,” where feet remain parallel and flat on ice, with the front points secured in the ice.
Ice tool placement is crucial for climbing efficiency and safety. Proper placement ensures secure holds during ascents. Aim for a solid, relaxed and straight swing of the ice axe.

Safety

Safety stands at the forefront of ice climbing. Essential equipment combined with ice climbing technique and mental awareness are factors that play a major role in safety. The unique challenges of ice climbing require attention and respect for nature, each other and safety equipment.
