Here you will find answers to the most common questions regarding Abisko Adventures tours.
Please also read the tour description and any booking confirmation as there is a lot of information there.

General questions

I'm driving to Abisko, where should I park?

Choose Abisko Guesthouse when you choose the pick-up location in the booking. There you can park your car and wait in the lobby until you are picked up when the tour starts.

Can I bring my dog ​​on the trip?

You can always email and check if you can book a private tour if you want to bring your dog. It can work if you want to hike or go on snowshoes, not ice climbing.

I suspect I lost an ithem on the tour, how di I do? can you check in the minivan? and if you find it how can I get it back?

Contact us as soon as possible and we will search the wan as quick as we can.
We can get the ithem back to your accomodation and if you allready left Abisko we can  send it to you (we use postnord, see their postage fees for more info about the cost)

Can I camp in Abisko?

If you camp whit a tent, there is a tent site at STF Abisko Turiststation.
In Abisko Östra it is not allowed to camp, it is a densely populated area and you therefore need to go out into the mountains a few kilometers to comply with the law against trespassing.
Look carefully at your mountain map as it is not allowed to camp in the National Park or in the surrounding nature reserves.
Otherwise, the right of public access applies, do not disturb – do not destroy. (no fires on the ground, don’t move rocks and no braking of trees and plants)

If you are camping with a camper van, roof tent or caravan, you can park for a maximum of 24 hours in parking lots along the E10 with an official parking sign, P.
Abisko Östra is a densely populated area and you cannot park your vehicle there and stay over night.
For rest areas with outdoor toilets and latrine emptying, we recommend Bessejokha rest area or Tornehamns rest area.
If you have booked an activity with us, choose the pick-up location ‘Abisko Guesthouse’ in your booking, where you can park during the day you are on the tour!

If you absolutley need to visit the willage, do so by foot and respect the privacy of the residence. Do not take pictures of people, pets or private property, thank you!

Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights

What is the northern lights, Aurora?


Its a natural fenomena that occures when particles from a solarstorm hits the armosfere and burns upp when they collide with oxygen on ther way to the earths surface.
The dancing strokes of different colored lights you can be able to se is particles that burns upp on different distances from earth.
The most comon color is green and that occures when particles collides with oxygenatoms on a distance of aproximetly 100 kilometer from earth.

When can I see the northern lights?

There are three factors the northern lights are depending on.
To see the northern lights it needs to be dark, it needs to be a clear and cloud free sky and it needs to be an ongoing solarstorm.

What makes Abisko one of the best areas to see the northern lights?

Abisko is located in a so called downpour-shadow, so there is usualy an open space in the clouds here even when the weatherforcast predict cloudy weather allower the area in general.

Ice climbing

Can I take the morning train from Kiruna, participate in the ice climbing tour and go back with the afternoon train?

No, unfortunately the train times do not match.

If you take the morning train to Abisko, you will have time to participate in the afternoon tour, but you will not have time to catch the train back.

If you participate in the morning tour, you will have time to catch the afternoon train from Abisko.

Is there an age limit for children on the ice climbing?

Yes, for children the age limit is from 10 years. Between the ages of 10-16 it is required that paying guardians also participate in the tour. 16-18 year olds may participate without an accompanying adult.

Can I come along and watch as my group climbs?

If you don’t want to climb, you can still book and pay for a place on the tour. In the event of an ice fall, it is required that everyone has safety equipment regardless of whether you climb or not, and that the shuttle bus has limited seats.

How long is the ice climbing season?

Generally, there is climbable ice from mid-November to the end of March.
But it can also vary a lot from year to year depending on the temperatures during late autumn. It needs to be cold enough for the water on the mountainsides to freeze.
North-facing icefalls on mountain sides usually freeze first, maintain the most consistent quality and are sometimes climbable until the end of April

How should I dress when I'm ice climbing?

See the weather forecast and dress according to the weather. Note that wind strength and cooling effect play a role in how cold it feels outside.

Most of the time it’s fine if you put on the clothes you have with you and don’t forget a hat and gloves. If you need to rent or borrow clothes, contact your accommodation and see what they can offer.

Which shoe sizes are available on the alpine boots and on the helmets?

On alpine boots there are sizes 36-48 (EU) and on helmets there are 48cm-63cm. Avoid hats with tassels/balls on them so that the helmet fits.

Snowshoes

Do I need a special type of shoe for the snowshoes to fit?

No, the snowshoes are sized according to your own shoes so normal boots or winter shoes will work fine. Low shoes or sneakers are not recommended.

A small backpack that can hold a jacket is good to bring in case you need to put on or take off some clothes during the tour.
